there's been a lot of fuss lately about jejemons, jejebusters, gibo's concession, erap's concession, and lately, the close race of Vice-Presidentiables, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and Senator Mar Roxas. In this case, I don't have the time to compare each candidate (I also don't feel the need to since it's clearly between Roxas and Binay). Rather, I'd compare the two of them to clearly give you a sound reason on why you should now support Binay (in case you're not yet doing so).
Let's start off with their present position and past significant accomplishments. I will not mention their educational attainment and all that because you already get the picture, Binay has been through a public school all his life, ended up as a lawyer and has a lot of honoris causa at the same time being a law fellow in Harvard. Roxas, being an ilustrado, has been educated in top schools all his life and has a degree in Wharton school but he isn't a lawyer.
With their present position, Binay has the upper hand. He is an executive official. A Mayor. In that position, Makati has won international awards and he was even awarded the 4th place in the World Mayor Awards conducted by research fellows in London. His changes in Makati can be read in the previous blog entry. Roxas is a Senator and his greatest accomplishment is the Cheaper Medicines Act. Also, he supports the E-VAT which actually makes him a hypocrite and not anymore an idealist. He says he loathes the present Philippine government and wants change. He has been in the opposition all his life similar to Binay but ironically, he supports the E-VAT. It doesn't take a Wharton Graduate to figure out that it's stupid to Tax people that is under a government that splurges on lavish trips abroad (PGMA is the most traveled Philippine Chief Executive). The Calamity fund? splurged on international excursions. Roxas? taxing people to increase their splurgings. Stupid.
Let me tell you why the E-VAT is just stupid. It is basically taxing people 12 percent on almost every aspect of the economy. Basically, it shouldn't work that way. There's no one size fits all when it comes to taxes. For example, Restaurants. You buy from a restaurant a meal that costs twice to thrice its normal production value without the evat. I'll tell you why. With E-VAT,everything builds up. The resto would purchase Raw Materials, 12 percent tax on every Raw material. The restaurant would by amenities, 12 percent again. You buy from the restaurant? you are actually partially paying all those 12 percent incurred by the restaurant on its purchases, plus service charge, and all these get summed up then you end up paying for the 12 percent of the sum. A ripoff? no. The Evat is just a no-brainer. You can't pass it off as simply "without taxes the government can't survive" because in truth, it's should actually be passed off as "taxes that go to finance a government that doesn't know what we-are-a-country-left-by-our-asian-neighbors-so-we-should-not-splurge-on-stupidly-extravagant-international-trips mean.
Additional taxes aren't needed as of this moment since a bulk of the taxes are spent unwisely and the paying of which is evaded by shrewd people.
When it comes right down to it, Binay knows how to make the most out of taxes. His simple feat of turning Makati from a Municipality left in debt by the effects of the revolution at the time and making it into the juggernaut we know today says a lot more than an explanation that I would give.
Mar did a lot more than Noynoy and in my view is the better candidate if only he hadn't pulled out of his presidential bid. But as of the vice-presidential race, he's losing to a man much better than him, who did a lot more than him. Now that's something he just can't pass off unlike the E-VAT issue.
Don't go with the hype. Stick to the facts. If T-Shirts/Ballers/Celebrities/Peer Pressure is all it takes to make you disbelieve known facts and still support the hyped candidate, then start asking yourself if you really care for this country.
