Weirdly, I feel for the judges.

In the past, I always criticized judges. How they act, them being gay (honestly, people do criticize that aspect. especially when a gay dude wins). But today, I saw a pattern. WHEN WE WIN, WE THINK THAT THOSE JUDGES ARE GENUINE GENIUSES. WHEN WE LOSE, WE THINK THAT THEY'RE SOME BUNCH OF BIASED PEOPLE.

Let me tell you how I discovered that pattern personally. Here's some personal instances of wins and losses.

When I was in 5th grade, I represented our school in an interschool declamation competition. Since I won the school elocution competition. I lost and I ranted and whined like a baby. I criticized the judges and their contestant. Because the winner came from their own school. I rationalized. The thing was, I'm no good in declamation.

In 1st year high school I won extemporaneous twice and got 2nd twice. I lost to the same person. A 4th year high school student. I also felt it was on uneven grounds because she's a 4th year student. But I noticed that when I beat the other year levels I felt some fulfillment.

In 2nd year, in a new school, I tried my luck again in declamation since I had no other choice. Our school doesn't have extemporaneous competitions. Maybe because we prefer memorized pieces from the minds of other people than our own. Where's the so-called "Eloquentia Perfecta" there? I won in the class declamation and I got whipped in the inter-class competition. I didn't feel bitter since I already was convinced that declamation isn't really my style.

In 3rd year, I got transferred from semi-honor's class to honor's class. It was a ZERO year for me in terms of speaking engagements. But I did get to expand my vocab and polish my grammar courtesy of our teacher's zero tolerance in terms of scores.

This year, I got in this group called pool of speakers and I won a scholarship in a regional competition sponsored by our school. THEY THOUGHT IT WAS BIASED. I didn't complain or what because I know that to explain it requires more than just my opinion. I had to prove a point. I had to make sure that I there'll be no more doubts. I won and represented the Philippines in the Scout International Youth Forum and placed in the Top 4 ( there's no such thing as champion. being the Host Country/asia-pacific/european/middle east representative is the farthest one can go). THEY CRITICIZED THAT SCOUT-ONLY COMPETITIONS ELIMINATE NON-SCOUT SPEAKERS. My take? I didn't rant. Again, I can't disprove them with my Opinion. These last few weeks, I really had to find a way to win in a competition that is NEUTRAL, participated by TOP SCHOOLS, and with OTHER PEOPLE AS CO-PARTICIPANTS. The latest competition was the Speech Olympics. Indeed, I won. But still, I met some criticism again. Who did they criticize this time? THE JUDGES. Yes, truly, people use their creativity now for criticism. They'd always find a nice reason to rationalize. How can they criticize the judges if they weren't even known by their names, by their school and all that other bias-inducing crap. WHAT ARE WE TURNING INTO? LIKE THAT FOX WHO DIDN'T GET THE "SOUR GRAPES"? WHY? ARE THEY IMMUNE TO LOSING SUCH THAT PEOPLE WHO DON'T DECLARE THEM AS WINNERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY CATEGORIZED AS "NONSENSICAL"?

My message? DON'T ENTER COMPETITIONS IF YOU DON'T RESPECT THE PEOPLE WHO DECLARE WINNERS. COMPETITIONS AREN'T COMPETITIONS ANYMORE WHEN YOU DON'T ENTERTAIN THE IDEA OF LOSING.

well i do get pissed off when people try to downplay what other people achieve. I've been through both sides of the situation and the only thing i can say is that nitpicking judges mistakes or finding mistakes outside the competition, (like the gender, gait etc.) is one of shrewdest acts people would do.

you won. so you think the judges are genuine geniuses?

you won anyway. so plainly, you're just enjoying the feeling of having gained something. congrats.

In the past I would think that way. But now, I don't think that they are. They're not infallible. But I believe that they judged to the best of their ability. That's the most important thing. Besides, winning is nothing without honor but judging by the fact that all of my teammates except one, were ranting about the judges, it's not something to be really happy about.

yo, i think dat ds anonymous dude tries to ring a bell. But ad3's just being honest and there's nothing that ds dude can say to disprove him.

yeah. Some people are just like that. Always trying to find fault in someone's line of thought and Reklamador may be the blog you should read if you want to practice spotting errors in Grammar but IT'S WAY TOO GENUINE THAT NO ONE CAN QUESTION AD3, GIL OR THE OTHER REKLA'S LINE OF THINKING. MABUHAY ANG REKLA!!

yup. one thing reklas have in common is deep respect for truth. In goes in all blogs. Some may be highly emotional but not without cold, hard, facts.

hey there! I really appreciate your blog. a lot of people can relate to it. and I'mone of those people. but this post, isn't there any reason why these people or person you are talking about had a reason for doing such? I mean, we all have reasons why we do things.

AD3 said...

yes we all have reasons. but there's no reason to be insensitive enough to comment on something that would hurt the feelings of others. those judges who judged the people who think they SHOULD HAVE won but LOST were the same people that judged ME. We're from the same school, i don't even know the judges, if it's just for the sake of not making it look like they didn't do biased judging, THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE WINNER FROM OTHER COMPETITIONS. Can anyone disprove this answer?

ronglarion said...

'nuff said. This anonymous guy says that he relates but i dont think he does. he doesn't even understand. Look, the issue is, there are insensitive people try to down the spirits of someone who helped their team win a place in the competition. They don't care whatever ad3 feels as long as they can justify their loss. bastards.

exactamente!

fernanlormat said...

exactly. it's really selfish and insensitive on their part. ad3 f*cking won the damn thing. Where can you find his "teammates" afterwards? instead of being happy they go insulting the judges; the same people who judged ad3. you say bastards? i say selfish bastards.

ok2x pro-ad3s, i understand that you really are into supporting me, but you should also take my teammates feelings into consideration. We're from a private school and their is this existing sense of pride that we can't lose to public school people. I got over it during youth forums but i don't think they did. Especially the perennial champ as he was chumped by the other contestant. he was ranting about the judges and the real champ for days on end. This aside, to all who support my stand, keep it light.
