Yesterday I had a full contact, no holds barred, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu match. My record is 34-2-0,12 29 wins via submission and 5 by referee stoppage with 2 losses via referee stoppage and no draws... Until yesterday...
So, basically a BJJ match consists of 3 rounds where a match has no time limit.... and my rank is on the line. My 2nd degree black belt goes on probation if I lose this... But my issue here is "ring rust" in in BJJ, "mat rust". Now that means, in a span of 2-3 years, I have never been on the mat. In a sparring, people just quit and tap out. But in the match yesterday pride and rank is on the line. So I made a pact with myself: I won't tap out not unless I'm about to pass out or if my violin fingers are in threat of breaking (no holds barred also means small limb manipulation are permitted).
Then, I fought. In the first round, I rolled around and missed a takedown and so he grabbed me by the neck and flipped for a rear naked choke (it is a choke from the back; don't be misdirected by the naked) I wiggled myself out of it and attempted a hammerlock but to no avail. We were in the half-guard position and I clinched my legs on his left arm and flipped for a cross fixed hold. He wiggled violently but I was on my way with a single arm gauntlet lock then, with my left arm, I choked him with a lapel choke he wiggled and I forced it with my full might and he, of course, can't tap out nor can he shout. I know that because I once passed out to this hold.
My technique is not to make him pass out, asphyxiate him nor to choke him to wonderland. I was just weakening him so that round 2 will be as easy as pie.
True enough, he can't tap out as his arms are locked. He can't shout because of the tighter than normal lapel choke. So, he can't basically show any signs of submission. But the crap referee ruined my plan. He noticed his eyes are wearing out and so he stopped the fight and deducted 3 points from me for unsportmanlike conduct But I won round 1.
Round 2 under way. I started with a sudden takedown but he took my arm, rolled it for an armbar, I barely lifted him and weakly slammed him against the cushioned mat. Amongst the plethora of BJJ locks, the armbar is the most orthopedically crazy as a 5-YEAR OLD KID can break your arm if that kid is applying that hold to you. He cranked it and I tapped out.
Round 3, I am desperate for points to nullify my 3 point deduction. I did a couple of turnovers by the odd number (to ensure I am ahead by 1 point) and I did a couple of supple locks (as lock attempts are awarded with 3 points each) once I thought the points were enough, I switched again to the half-guard position then I attempted a knee breaker hold and he attempted a triangle choke. Anatomically speaking, his knee is in trouble of snapping and I am in trouble of passing out. Crazy but it happened. On the verge of me passing out, I broke his knee and I passed out. So it's a draw via doctor stoppage (as the mat doctor rushed in when everyone heard his knee snap). While I, slept, taken by the stretcher and also brought to the hospital. I woke up to bright lights again, but this time, I didn't lose. I didn't regret not winning because its way better than not tapping out. Woooh. Good thing the hospital here has Wifi. hahahahahahaha. Viva la raza!!!
