We have all said cuss words right? saying something like "shit!" or "fuck!" might have become part of our verbal array of words that are commonly used. But really, what is the etymology of these words and how did they come into usage? This blog will now dig deeper into why and how did these words creep into our vocabulary despite their obvious profanity.
1. "Shit!"- this is the most common cuss word known to mankind. It literally means poo and is used to vehemently express your negative emotion. This originated from USA. Variations: Shoot, Shizzz, Siakoy.
2. "Siakoy!"- this is a more acceptable cuss word since it does not have a profane meaning but it is still used due to. This means a particular type of street food that's too complex to explain. This is usually used to express potential frightening circumstances, or as a substitute for "Shit!". This originated from Visayan-speaking regions in the Philippines.
3. "Yawa!"- this is the epitome of profanity in Cagayan de Oro and other Visayan speaking countries. It means the Devil or Demons (since the devil and demons have no separate word in the Visayan language). Saying this word again and again and again and again in public places will really make people disgusted. Yao ming is often used as a substitute as not to sound profane.
4. "Chingga"- Chingga, often lengthened to chingga bunana or chingga bunani, is the most common Philippine cuss word that's used in latinized Philippine cities like Zamboanga or certain parts of Pampanga. It's as profane as Yawa but still its meaning varies from area to area. When used to a greater degree, chinggona is used.
5. "-bunana"- it's a pidgin spanish suffix exclusively used for cuss words. Today, it's used for lengthening cuss words or adding more depth and hatred into it. It is the colloquial form of "de bos nana" which means "your mom" (it's not tunana since tu is the polite and formal Spanish way of saying "your" or "you" along with the usage of other words). So when Chingga is lengthened to Chinggabunana, that means that your mom is chingga. Bunani is the softened form of chingga.
6. "Ssibal" (shi-bal)- the Korean cuss word that literally means "fuck". It's starting to come into usage as more Koreans Invade the Philippines and mix their cultures with us.
